HBHS Headmaster's Message Tuesday, 19 October 2021
Tena koutou katoa e te whanau
Welcome back to Term 4. In spite of our unusual and disappointing start, the term remains a time both of consolidation of the work completed this year, and of celebration, as we recognise the achievements of so many young men.
Yesterday, we learned that we will remain at Alert Level 3 for at least the remainder of this week. Thus it is important that all students settle quickly back to a normal, dedicated routine. Our Senior school has only three weeks and two days before our Prize giving and the beginning of study leave, and our juniors have only the same time frame before the start of their important end of year examinations.
Thus every day is important. We appreciate your support in reinforcing this critical message, and in encouraging your son to be focussed on completing the year as positively as possible. Our teachers are completely committed to our goal of using our time well, and we are there for your son, in any way in which we are able to help. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any concerns or questions.
Yesterday, our Senior Management Team met, and confirmed the changes necessary in our term calendar. When we return to Alert Level 2, we will continue to hold all Assemblies through Zoom. Our Celebration Awards evenings of Arts and Culture, Maori and Pasifika, and Sports, will still occur on the same date, but will be held after school, so that students can attend without having to return in the evening, and they will all be student and staff only events.
This is disappointing, as these celebrations are a very special part of our year; however, the Ministry of Education guidelines for Alert Level 2 are very clear, and we are committed to maintaining a healthy risk free environment in these challenging times. We will be recording the events, and if possible they will be live streamed so that as parents you are able to watch from a distance.
Sadly, we have made the decision to cancel this year’s Leavers’ Dinner. It is a very special part of our Year 13 students’ journey, and we are very sorry that it cannot occur in 2021. My thanks to the Parents' Association for the work they have done in organising this function.
At this point, we have only adjusted the calendar for the first three weeks of the term. If we have to make further changes, you will be notified as quickly as possible.
I look forward very much to a change next week, so that we can welcome students back to the school for the final weeks for Senior students. I hope that it is able to happen! It is doubly frustrating to be in this situation, while most of the country is back at school. However, we must be grateful that our actions are preventing further illness in our wider community, and that we can remain optimistic that this is, for us, a short term situation.
I will be in touch as we learn more; my very best wishes to all of our whanau as we work together to support the very special, wonderful young men who make Hamilton Boys’ High School the very best school in the country.
