HBHS Chess team in the medals at National Tournaments
A number of Chess Power National Tournaments were played over the Labour Day weekend.
Five of our students qualified through the regional tournament process to travel to Auckland to represent HBHS. On Saturday our team of Michael Lin, Nathanael and Daniel Loy, Udula Bandara and Lasen Silva competed against teams from all over New Zealand and did very well to be placed 2nd behind Mount Roskill Grammar.
Meanwhile, there was a second parallel tournament held online and we were entitled to enter a further five players in this tournament. We were well represented by Joel Crombie, Sean Clark, Andy Song, Ishaan Singh and Aidan Webster. After nine rounds of play, spread over eight hours, HBHS emerged victorious, winning the floating trophy and gold medals for the team members. Ishaan Singh was our best player of the day, scoring an impressive 8/9.
Sunday saw the Champions Trophy being held with students competing for personal glory against opponents who very often included other HBHS students. After a day of hard-fought games, with the tournament lead changing several times, Michael Lin emerged as the New Zealand National Chess Power Senior Champion, with Nathanael Loy joint 3rd.
Congratulations to all our Chess players on these outstanding results.
