Inclusivity

Statement from Hamilton Boys’ High School: As one of the leading secondary schools in Aotearoa New Zealand, Hamilton Boys’ High School is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment and community for all students and staff, regardless of who they are, where they come from or what they believe in. We understand that schools may be a difficult time and place for young people as they navigate their gender identity and sexuality. Hamilton Boys’ High School is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all, and has already taken steps to fulfil that commitment. At HBHS, we recognise that:
  • Gender and sexuality are intrinsic to one’s identity and sense of self
  • A safe and inclusive environment is crucially important for a young person’s growth and development
  • Bullying of any kind, including that related to gender and sexuality, can cause significant harm and steps must be taken to prevent it
In order to fulfil our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all staff and students, the school and Te Ohu Atawhai, the HBHS HEART Initiative* have developed an Inclusivity Policy to support inclusive practices at Hamilton Boys’ High School. Alongside the policy, a 10-year plan is in ongoing development. This plan will phase in practices that will put us at the forefront of inclusive education in Aotearoa New Zealand. *Te Ohu Atawhai, the HBHS HEART Initiative is a student-led student wellbeing group that focuses on mental health and inclusivity. Its mission is to advocate and educate. It is led by the Student Leader of Inclusivity, who is appointed by the Headmaster every year. All students who are interested and have a passion for leadership and advocacy are welcome to join.
